چکیده

The combination effects of light and air temperature, which were expressed as photothermal ratio (PTR), on the growth and sex expression of three monoecious cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L. cv. “Xintaimici”, “Jinyan 3” and “Jinyan 4”) were studied with hydroponics in this research. The results showed that with the increase of PTR, different growth responses were observed in the three cucumber cultivars. In contrast, high PTR (H-PTR, 0.86 mol∙m−2∙degree-day−1) significantly increased the total number of female nodes and decreased the total number of male nodes of the three monoecious cucumber cultivars compared with cucumbers grown under low PTR (L-PTR, 0.64 mol∙m−2∙degree-day−1). More photoassimilate was partitioned to fruits of three cucumber cultivars with the increase of PTR, indicating that PTR-mediated femaleness of monoecious cucumber might be attributed to the enhancement of photoassimilate translocation from source organs to sink organs.

INHERITANCE OF GYNOECISM IN CUCUMBER (Cucumis sativus L.) USING GENOTYPE GBS-1 AS GYNOECIOUS PARENT

Pati K., A. Das Munshi and T. Kanti Behera (2015): Inheritance of gynoecism in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) using genotype gbs-1 as gynoecious parentGenetika, Vol 47, No. 1, 349-356. The inheritance pattern of gynoecious sex expression in cucumber was studied by utilizing a gynoecious line (GBS-1) and two monoecious lines (Pusa Uday and Punjab Naveen). Crosses were made between gynoecious line...

The ethylene-regulated expression of CS-ETR2 and CS-ERS genes in cucumber plants and their possible involvement with sex expression in flowers.

It has been reported that ethylene production by cucumber plants is strongly related to the sex expression of their flowers. It has also been shown that both CS-ACS2 gene expression and ethylene evolution are much greater in gynoecious cucumber plants than monoecious ones. To investigate the action mechanism of ethylene in the induction of femaleness of cucumber flowers, we isolated three ethyl...

Determination of Relative Auxin Content in Hermaphrodite and Andromonoecious Cucumis sativus L.

A causal relationship between growth substances and sex expression probably exists in Cucuntis sativus L. (cucumber). This assumption is based on a number of publications which documented a shift towards femaleness in monoecious cucumbers treated with auxins (8), or with growth retardants (16). An even more remarkable shift, but towards maleness, was caused by gibberellins (24). The experimenta...

Contents and recovery of gibberellins in monoecious and gynoecious cucumber plants.

Diffusates from seedlings and root exudates from 6-week-old plants of a monoecious line of cucumber, Cucumis sativus L., contained considerably higher levels of gibberellin-(GA-) like substances than did those from plants of an isogenic gynoecious line. Most of the GA-like activity was found in a chromatogram region typical of GA(1) and GA(3); some activity, particularly in root exudates, appea...

Sugar signalling is involved in the sex expression response of monoecious cucumber to low temperature.

This study aimed to investigate how low temperature alters the sex expression of monoecious cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.). Plants were grown under different day/night temperature regimes, 28 °C/18 °C (12 h/12 h), 18 °C/12 °C, 28 °C/12 °C, and 28 °C/(6 h 18 °C+6 h 12 °C). It was found that plant femaleness is highest in the 28 °C/(6 h 18 °C+6 h 12 °C) treatment. Analysis of endogenous phytohorm...
